Did you know that 25 percent of America’s newest golf courses were built near Austin in the past decade or so? It should be no surprise, then, that Austin offers some of the best golf in Texas. Check out these course next time you’re looking to play a round.

1.Avery Ranch Golf Club

Seated in northwest Austin, Avery Ranch Golf Club was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust and is a spectacular blend of up-scale golf and natural splendor. Awesome limestone caverns, rolling hills, and lazy streams and lakes make for a unique and utterly enrapturing golf experience. Avid Golfer magazine has even ranked Avery Ranch  No. 1 for best course conditions, clubhouse, dining area, and design.


2. Barton Creek Resort

Barton Creek’s golf course was designed by three game masters ‒‒ Ben Crenshaw, Arnold Palmer, and Tom Fazio. This means a ton of experience and gamesmanship, which translates into a challenging course that will make you earn it. The good thing is, this is true for novices and schooled duffers alike. For many, Barton Creek is the gold standard for Texas golf. The course has been recognized by most major golf publications as one of the best courses in the southwest.


3.Blue Lake Golf Course

If you’re looking for a short game, Blue Lake Golf Course is a great course for any player. This exquisitely maintained nine-hole golf courses offers magnificent views of Lake LBJ and a uniquely challenging layout of rolling terrain, elevated greens, and granite outcroppings. You won’t play another course quite like it anywhere in Texas.


4. Canyon Lake Golf Club

Tucked into the beautiful Texas Hill Country, about halfway to San Antonio, is Canyon Lake Golf Club. This meticulously maintained course features a rather gentle design, complete with rolling hills, live oaks, and lakefront views that belie the challenging terrain ahead. The course has recently been renovated to make for better cart trafficways and to replenish the course’s natural beauty. Play from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.  


5. Forest Creek Golf Club

Thirty minutes from downtown Austin, in Round Rock, lies the Forest Creek Golf Club, the top public courses in central Texas, according to Golf Digest. The course, designed by Dick Phelps, is a championship-level course that will challenge beginners and advanced golfers alike. It also offers requisite stunning views of the Hill Country. I hope this is satire, right? I have played all of these courses and you're not even close to the mark. Blue Hole? Really? The word hole is the only appropriate comparison.

Public Courses - Barton Creek (all 4 courses), Falcon Head, and The Rock courses at Horshoe Bay blow the other 4 courses you listed out of the water.

And if you're talking private courses, Austin Country Club, Austin Golf Club, and Spanish Oaks are better than everything on your list, and comparable to Barton Creek, which isn't really public, but open to those staying at the resort.
