Coffee. That’s usually all you have to say if you want to hear anyone say “Uh, yes, please.”

But where to get a great cup in a great atmosphere? Well, coffee joints are not just a 90s holdover, they’re still dynamite places to get in touch with your inner caffeine addict and get a mini-vacation without going too far away.

Caffe Medici

Just because a café is a chain, it doesn’t mean it’s not terrific. Between the vaunted Espresso Medici cappuccino and the precision with which the baristas make every cup ‒‒ seriously, they run every cup through a French press ‒‒ you’d have a hard time finding a mediocre drink here. Try a cup with a vegan energy bar, made by fellow Austin awesomeness purveyor, Bearded Brothers.

Cenote

Over in East Austin, Cenote offers some truly unique blends, doing its part to keep Austin weird. Maybe you’ve never had a latte with notes of plum and citrus, but maybe you should. By which we mean, you really, really should. Cenote also offers some serious lunch and snacking options that can be both healthy and hefty.

Patika Coffee

Cuvée's sought-after blends are big in Austin coffee shops. Patika is no different in its quest to be a must-stop café in the capital city. Fortunately, you get two locations to see for yourself ‒‒ its still-new brick-and-mortar location on South Lamar and its original (and still-standing) cart at 4th and Congress.

Houndstooth Coffee

This popular Austin spot is known for boasting “craft coffee.” The term refers to the fact that baristas here are not mere college students wafting through, they are trained artisans who actually do take a lot of pride in crafting a precise, tailored cup of joe. And by “cup of joe,” we mean just about any coffee drink, hot or cold, that you can throw at them. Posted by Richard Soto on
