One of the great things about Austin is that there’s little need to stay indoors for too long. With the Hill Country right there and an abundance of trails and parks nearby, it’s easy to get out and about. And a good hike can do wonders for your spirits. Check out these great hikes.

Blunn Creek

Random

You don’t have to leave downtown to go on a hike. Blunn Creek is a wonderful nature preserve trail just off South Congress. Yes, it’s small ‒‒ a mere mile walk, actually ‒‒ but you know what they say about good things in small packages. There’s plenty to explore at Blunn Creek and it’s the perfect size and location to step out of the city for a few minutes when you can’t actually get away for too long.

Wild Basin Wildlife Preserve

Views of the hill Country are a constant amenity for Austinites, but few places offer them like the 227-acre Wild Basin Wildlife preserve. Owned and maintained by Travis County and St. Edward’s University, Wild Basin is home to protected and endangered animals and plants. Cyclists and dogs are prohibited for this reason. But you won’t miss the dog when you drink in the rocky cliffs, shady glens, and stunning vistas.

Turkey Creek

If you do want to take the dog for a hike, try Turkey Creek, which sits just past the Pennybacker Bridge. Depending on the season, there may be a little less creek to see, but the surroundings are always beautiful and lush and will give any hiker a nice workout. Speaking of dogs, they love playing in the pools here. Don’t wear your nicest duds if you come here with the pets.

Barton Creek

There are two entrances to Barton Creek. One is the favored of most Austinites, the Greenbelt entrance. The other is the Scottish Woods entrance. Either way, you’re in for some great views and great hiking. The Scottish entrance may be a little more challenging, as hikers will walk down a rocky slope to get into the creek area. It’s a good spot for a casual stroll once you’re in the creek area, but you’ll want to check out the trails that take you deep into the woods and yield glimpses of wonderful natural beauty Posted by Richard Soto on
