Selma is proud to call itself a "city of choice." The name "Selma" (meaning "buffalo" in an American Indian language) reflects the native history of the area. Selma also has rich agricultural roots. Fertile lands were ideal for growing cotton, corn, what, oats and milo maize. Selma has recently seen a boom in the housing industry, largely due to the military base and Selma's location.
