Most of Nevada is located in the Great Basin, as well as the Mojave Desert, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Nearly 86 percent of the land in Nevada is owned by the U.S. government.

Many areas of this state receive 310 days of sunshine every year. Although this state boasts a population of 2.7 million, nearly two-thirds of the population is located in the Las Vegas Metropolitan area.

Nevada, of course, enjoys a strong tourism industry, thanks to the resort areas of Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe and Laughlin. This state, as of 2008, boasted 266 casinos and a gaming revenue of over $12 billion.

Other economic drivers of Nevada are: agriculture, including cattle, hay, onions and potatoes; and industry, including mining, machinery, printing, food processing and publishing. The areas located outside of Las Vegas and Reno are known for their mining and cattle ranching. Gold mining here remains a strong, economic driver.
