Jamaica Beach Homes for Sale
Jamaica Beach offers a wide variety of lifestyles with bay, canal, beach, wetland, and dry-lot residences and homesites available. Business partners and brothers Welcome and Jack Wilson, Johnny Goyen, Earl Galceran, Bill Sherrill, and Jack Valenti developed Jamaica Beach as a weekend resort community. Development in the community began in the late 1950s on 320 acres of land rumored to be the burial ground of the Karankawa Indians. The area began to attract full-time homeowners in the 1970s. The majority of homes for sale are either second or vacation homes though there’re more full-time homeowners in Jamaica Beach than on the West End.
Living in Jamaica Beach and Community Highlights
The community maintains several parks to the delight of residents. They include Jamaica Beach City Park which features amenities such as a playground with swings, a basketball court, a picnic area, and a weather-resistant pavilion with a kitchen. Next to the City Park on Jolly Roger Road is Jamaica Beach swimming pool. Regatta Basin public boat ramp provides access to the canals of Jamaica Beach which lead to West Bay.
Jamaica Beach is a popular tourist destination thus much of the population is seasonal. But the population increases significantly during the vacation season. As a result, much of the economy centers around tourism. Another thing is that Jamaica Beach has a well staffed and equipped police force that has earned the community the reputation of being the safest residential area on the island.
