Residents here enjoy a 30-minute commute to the downtown district of Austin and a 20-minute commute to the airport. Driftwood was first developed around 1850, but the community itself really grew into existence in the 1880s. The community began to grow, mainly because of its access to the rail terminals in both Kyle and Buda. Although the population continued to grow, it began a virtual ghost town by the 1970s. Driftwood remains a quiet Hill County town today, but it is now steadily growing in population. Children in Driftwood attend the Hays Independent School District, the Dripping Springs Independent School District or the Wimberley Independent School District. Outdoor recreation in Driftwood is enjoyed at Camp Ben McCullough, where residents can camp and picnic.
