You might have heard rumors to the effect that Christmas and the holiday season are around the corer again. Well, in between fighting the mall traffic, frantic plan-making, and ‘Yeah, I’ll just have one more cookie,” you might want to catch one of Austin’s great holiday shows. Here’s some of the lineup you can catch before 2015 sets in.

1. The Nutcracker, Dec. 6-23, Dell Hall

Kick off the holidays with the legendary Nutcracker. Ballet Austin brings what is probably the most famous Russian ballet ever written, to  Dell Hall, at the Long Center for the Performing Arts, starting Dec. 6. Unlike other renditions of The Nutcracker, this one runs for multiple performances, through December 23. So there’s no good reason to pass this one up (not like there ever is). 2. Elf, Nov. 28-30, Dell Hall

It may not be in town long, but Elf will make a big impression on the kids. A Broadway smash based on the Will Farrell smash movie, the story follows the adult years of a former worker in Santa’s shop. Fun for all ages. For details, click here

3. Brian Setzer Orchestra: Christmas Rocks, Dec. 12, Moody Theater

The blondest pompadour in rock belongs to Brian Setzer, who’s turned his post-Stray Cats life into a rollicking blend of rock, opera, classical, and swing. Setzer, pompadour and band with him, brings his lauded holiday music show to Austin for one night only, on December 12. Suitable for all ages, this is a show to see. If you like rollicking, humorous, amazing music, that is. For details, click here.

4. Cirque Dreams: Holidaze, Dec. 29-30, Cedar Park Center

Round out 2014 in gingerbread style with Cirque Dreams: Holidaze. Marvel at gingerbread men flipping through the air, toy soldiers skillfully marching on thin wires, snowmen daringly balancing, icemen sculpting powerfully, penguins spinning, puppets caroling, and reindeer soaring high above a wondrous holiday landscape. This is by far not your average holiday show. For details, click here. Posted by Richard Soto on
