1. SUNDANCE SQUARE

 

Best known as a former hangout for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Sundance Square is now Widely acknowledged as the most exciting downtown area in Texas. Sundance Square is a 35-block entertainment and shopping district that attracts millions of visitors each year and has been just recently remodeled. With world class entertainment at Nearby Bass Performance Hall, and dozens and dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops, Sundance Square is a must see attraction when visitors come to town. A very visible local police and private security force make this one of the safest places in the United States at night.

2. The FT. WORTH ZOO

Opened in 1909, The Ft. Worth Zoo is lauded as one of the Top 10 Zoos in the United States. Originally stocked with one lion, two bear cubs, an alligator, a coyote, a peacock and a few rabbits, the zoo know boasts over 5,000 native and exotic animals. Some of the main attractions:

1. Penguins: A colony of African black-footed penguins, with a beach and an underwater viewing area

2. Raptor Canyon: An aviary that opened in 1993 and that is home to crowned eagles, Andean condor, a milky eagle owl, harpy eagles, and bateleur eagles

3. Asian Falls: Starts with the Asian elephant complex, which also includes rhinos, white tigers, Malayan tigers, sun bears, and Asian tufted deer.

4. World of Primates: 2.5-acres that includesChimpanzees,black and white colobus monkeys, 2 gorilla groups, orangutans, mandrills, and white-cheeked gibbons, and both indoor and outdoor habitats.

5. African Savannah: Here you can see rhinos, giraffes, and ostriches, which can be viewed from an elevated boardwalk.

6. Great Barrier Reef: This is home to Australian aquatic animals in three tanks containing more than 10,000 US gallons of water. The exhibit includes 500 animals representing 86 species, including clownfish, blacktip reef sharks, angelfish, brain corals, moray eels and sea apples.

Other exhibits include Cheetahs, Parrots, Flamingo Bay, Meerkat Mounds, Australian Outback, Texas Wild! and the Museum of Living Art.

3.. THE STOCKYARDS HISTORICAL DISTRICT

Stockyards In Ft Worth

Ft. Worth was the last stop on the Chisholm Trail before cattle herds crossed the Red River on their way to Kansas. Country Music legedary venue, Billy Bobs Texas, is a favorite attraction, as well as the White Elephant Saloon, which was originally located in the dangerous Hell's Half Acre section of Ft Wprth's North Side. The White Elephant was the location of Ft. Worth's last known gunfight, on February 8, 1887, between Luke Short, the owner and a friend of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, and former Sheriff "Longhair Jim" Cartwright, the notoriously corrupt lawman whose gun jammed and was killed by 3 shots from Luke Short's gun. The famous shootout is re-enacted every Feb. 8 in the street outside the White Elephant.

The Stockyards hosts the Stockyards Championship Rodeo every Friday and Saturday night, as well as a twice-daily cattle drive for those interested in the way things were in the late 1800's.

4. The CULTURAL DISTRICT

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and The Kimball Art Museum offer world class paintings, sculpture, and works on paper, and highly rated by visitors as two of the best attractions Ft. Worth has to offer.

5. FORT WORTH BOTANIC GARDEN

A beautiful selection of a wide variety of plants as well as local wildlife (if you are lucky!) The Japanes Gardens are splendid, and the Koi are friendly. Take the kids, wear walking shoes, and have a picnic.
